History of St.Joseph's Church
The village of Thirukkovil is situated 72 kilometers away from Batticaloa town. It is in Ampara district, the Southern East Part of Sri Lanka. In the Ampara district it is a well known village with Hindu majority. In the 20th century with the arrival of the English regime in Sri Lanka the culture and the economy of the village began to grow. Paddy cultivation and fishing are the main sources of income of the people of Thirukovil.
During this period a lady from Belgium asked Rev.Fr.HENRY BOORY S.J. who was the parish priest of kalmunai(34 kilometes away from Thirukovil), to build a church dedicated to St. JOSEPH. At this time the family of Mr. Stanly Green arrived in Sri Lanka and they were friendly with Rev.Fr.HENRY BOORY S.J. They showed interest in building the church. Mrs. Kathleen Ogtredy was appointed secretary to Mr. Stanly Green. Rev.Fr.HENRY BOORY S.J. took this opportunity and bought a land from the government of Sri Lanka in 1923. Mr. Stanly green supervised the work of building the church. Mrs. Ogtredy continued to support financially until they complete St. Joseph’s church at Thirukkovil.
